Our History
In
1946, the same year Delaware’s own Curley Smart drove Ensign
Hanover to win in the first Brown Jug Race, The Brown Jug Restaurant
was established. At that time, The Brown Jug was located around the
corner on North Sandusky Street in the old Deposit Bank building.
Twenty-four years and several owners later,
The Brown Jug Restaurant moved from Sandusky Street to its present
location at
13 West William Street.
Built in 1871 this Italianate style brick
two story building had several tenants prior to 'The Jug’,
including The Peoples Store and Zack Davis Seed Company.
Bill
Stroud and Ed Wolf purchased the business in September of 1977.
They operated the business with only minor interior changes until
1989 when they removed the redwood front and restored the building
to its original Italianate Architectural style. Summer of 2004 saw
the addition of a patio which seats over 80.
Over the years the basic menu has remained the same, a diversified
selection of American cuisine and the goal is the same today as
it was then - to offer good food at a good price in a relaxed atmosphere.
